Dogged Determination: Lessons from Thomas Edison

Dogged Determination: Lessons from the life of Thomas Edison

Growing is a matter of time, once you are determined

“Many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up”

Determination is one indispensable key to success.
Edison had a very high dose of it. Nothing short of this can adequately explain the secret behind his numerous achievements, in spite of the prevailing circumstances. A man of resolute determination knows no impossibility. Edison’s life bears eloquent testimony to this.

Edison had many set backs in life ranging from having a poor background to lack of formal education. Yet these would not stop him from achieving his goals in life. Many instances in his life clearly show he was a man of resolute determination. Dogged determination,  certainly would the right word to describe his reaction to the incidence of his great film plant that was razed down by fire. How would you describe a man who chose to not give up on an experiment that failed about a thousand times? Absolutely, he must have been resolutely determined.

Determination is coined by the Oxford dictionary as “firmness of purpose”. It has much to do with making up your mind, suggests the idea of pressing forward against all odds, says a great deal about positive mindset and being decided or decisive. It supports the concept of perseverance, persistence and progressive commitment. Determination in short is the ability not to give up, ability not to quit, ability to continue in the pursuit of our goals.

People who end up as failure in life are not necessarily lacking in skills or ability; However, the majority of them, belong to the class of those who give up too soon. The irony of it all is that, they give up often just at the point of their breakthrough. What if Edison had given up after his many unfruitful experiments? What if he had decided not to rebuild his film plant that was completely burnt? After all it was not his fault and he had every right to be discouraged too. What if he had allowed his critics to get a greater hold on him? Sure, we should not be talking or reading about him today.

You can achieve your goals by being resolutely determined. Are you saying “I have tried my best”? Yes, you have tried, but you can do better; It is also possible you haven't tried enough, so, try harder.  Your dreams can become a reality, but your mind must be firmly made up about it. The project you are thinking about is not impossible, only you will have to fully give all it takes. Do you wonder why you are yet to hit your target? It is most likely because you haven't shown enough evidence of dogged determination like Thomas Edison.  "
When I thought I couldn't go on, I forced myself to keep going. My success is based on persistence, not luck"Estee Lauder

The principle is don't give up.  Bjorn Borg's has this to say, "My greatest point is my persistence. I never give up in a match. However down I am, I fight until the last ball. My list of matches shows that I have turned a great many so-called irretrievable defeats into victories".

You might have failed before, but that isn't enough to get you defeated; A look at Edison (Edison’s Set Backs) will convince you. Edison believed "we can make capital out of disaster", even after losing his film plant to fire.  The day following the fire disaster, with the fire still on, Edison was said to have called his employees together and declared, "we are rebuilding." This kind of optimism wouldn't make sense to many people!

No doubt, you too are faced with many challenges, but, can I tell you, those challenges are simply predictable. Predictable? Oh, yes, in the sense that, nothing good comes easy; Also, in the sense that they will always come one way or the other to anyone who desire to accomplish anything good in this life. So you are not alone in the struggle. It is the experience of everyone who likes to make a difference.

The greatest achievers the world has ever known all battled with one challenge or the other, some like Edison had a catalogue of challenges to wrestled with. It is very true that the greatest of men are always faced with the greatest of challenges. The good news, however, is for those who are resolute in their determination, victory is always certain, though struggle continues.

Edison tries his first incandescent light
Thomas Edison’s life teaches us a priceless lesson of dogged determination. We are instructed never to give up. If it is a worthwhile venture, then keep at it, refuse to quit, be resolute about it and you will soon be celebrated like Edison of old. Believe you can, and you will. If Edison could, then you sure can! God bless you.

The problems confronting you are the problems you have been assigned to solve.

“Perseverance is a great element of success. If you only knock long enough at the gate, you are sure to wake up somebody”. – Henry W. Longfellow

COURAGE IN CRISIS

COURAGE IN CRISIS : THOMAS EDISON’S STORY

Life is full of challenges. No matter who you are, you sure will have your fair share. Edison was not spared either
. He had more than enough challenges to knock him out of the way to success. What saw him through was courage.

It is pretty hard not to give up after a thousand times of failed experiments. It is most difficult not to quit when all you have got is on fire; starting life anew or all over again calls for a great deal of courage. Edison went on courageously, his numerous challenges notwithstanding, thereby writing his name in gold on the sand of history.

Being courageous does not suggest absence of problems, difficulties or fear; contrariwise, it is simply having a firm resolve to forge ahead no matter what is happening or not happening. Ambrose Redmon captures it this way, “courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the judgment that something else is more important than one’s fear.”

The aphorism “winners never quit,” has its root in courage. If you must win, you must not quit, and if you will not quit, then you must be courageous. For he who fights and runs, lives to fight another day.

CHALLENGES IN THE LIFE OF THOMAS EDISON

Challenges in the life of Thomas Edison

We have seen Thomas Edison as the father of invention. The question is: did he face any challenge? We probably would expect this great man had a smooth ride through life - a kind of exempted from major life challenges. The simple truth is, he had lots of challenges, may be catalogues of them. The good news, however, is he rose above them all to become the Edison worth reading or talking about today.

The incidence of his 'great plant' that was razed down by fire is one major challenge in the life of Edison worth mentioning. History tells us that on a particular night in December, 1914, Thomas Edison's plant caught fire. The outrageous fire reportedly burnt off virtually everything in the plant. Attempts at putting it out by fire fighters from eight surrounding towns failed to yield the desired result. Edison's attitude and response to this incidence is perhaps the most interesting part of the story.

On arrival at the scene, Edison was said to have sent words to several friends and members of his family, advising them to “get down here quick ... you may never have another chance to see anything like this again”. The following morning before it was day break and while the fire was still on, he was said to have called his employees together and told them “we are rebuilding". Speaking further, Edison maintained “we can make capital out of disaster".

Edison seems to have this attitude of always looking at the brighter side of every situation. He just wouldn't allow any circumstance to deter him from achieving his goals. His responses and attitude in times of difficulty lend credence to this position. For instance, Edison did not have formal education, but that did not stop him from making history as one of the greatest inventors. History says he had partial deafness, but that wasn't an issue to him. He had several fruitless experiments, but wouldn't give in to discouragement. His film plant got burnt off, yet, he resolved to start all over again.

Besides his attitude to life - looking at the bright side of life at all times - Edison had an uncommon passion for hard work. Even after making several inventions, he remained as hardworking as ever or even more hardworking. Furthermore, Edison was a goal oriented individual, part of his goals was to come up with a major new invention every six months, and a minor invention every ten days. Any wonder that he had thousands of inventions? Another striking quality in this great man was his ability to manage success. His many achievements, breakthrough inventions and several awards/recognitions never got into his head. Only very few people can maintain this level of discipline.

One valuable lesson here is this "There is no such thing as a failure- there are only unexpected outcomes which will provide valuable guidance for future works".... Brighten up your life

Thomas Edison: The Father of Inventions

Thomas Edison: The Father of Inventions

-           “Genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration”  - Thomas Edison
-          “I don’t know anyone who has got to the top without hard work. That is the recipe, it may not always get you to the top, but should get you pretty near” – Margaret Thatcher

The popular Thomas Edison Alva, generally branded the “father of invention,” was born in 1847 in Milan, Ohio in the United States as the last of a family of seven. He remains the greatest inventor of all times and his life has great challenges for us today. Let us briefly look through his life then and see what lessons we can learn from him.

Edison had nearly no academic background almost like no other person as he was opportune to go to school for only three months in 1854. His mother however taught him how to read and write. Edison recalled, “My mother was the making of me. She was so true, so sure of me and I felt I had something to live for, someone I must not disappoint”. His mother homeschooled him, but on his own, he started to be very hardworking from a very tender age. When he was still very young, he read through many notable and important books, equivalence of what could be termed ‘self-training’. For instance, at age twelve, he had gone through ‘Gibbon’s Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire’, completed ‘Sear’s History of the World,’ ‘Burton’s Anatomy of Melancholy,’ ‘The World’s Dictionary of Science,’ and a number of works on practical chemistry. This certainly is more than commendable for a boy of his age.

As if born to be unfortunate, Edison still at twelve lost his hearing due to an attack of scarlet fever (a childhood disease). But his habit of hard work got him a job to sell apples, candy and newspaper at a railway station. His experience here could best be described as ‘bitter-sweet’. At fifteen, and still working at the railway station, he bought a small printing press and soon began to produce newspaper, the weekly herald, which he edited, printed and sold at the railroad.

Around this time also, Edison was reported to have rescued a three-year old boy, who was the son of the station master from being struck by a runaway train. The father of the boy was so grateful that he taught Edison how to operate the telegraph (a device used in sending messages over a long distance). This event was to change his story as Edison the telegrapher.

At about the age of thirty, Thomas Edison began his career as an inventor. His earliest inventions were related to telegraphy. He improved on telegraphic devices, but the invention which first gained him recognition was the phonograph (record player). This accomplishment was said to be unexpected by the public and appeared almost magical for which Edison became known as “the wizard…”

Edison was well known to be exceptionally focused and determined. Consequently he succeeded in making over one thousand inventions. Some of these in addition to the phonograph include, the first industrial research laboratory, electrical vote recorder, automatic telegraph system, motograph, electric pen, the carbon rheostat, microtasimeter, carbon telephone, transmitter “button” which led to the development of the microphone, also making early radio possible. Others are workable incandescent light bulb, construction of first practical generators, sockets, meters, switches, paper tape, and insulating tape. He constructed the first electric motor, invented the magnetic ore separator, and discovered an unknown phenomenon which later became known as Edison effect, a foundational principle upon which radio, television, and computer transistors are based. He invented wireless system of communication, motion picture camera, and machine for breaking rocks, fluoroscope, alkaline storage battery, telescribe and so many other things.

Thomas Edison’s attitude to work was an unenviable one as he worked with extraordinary intensity. He lived in his laboratory, slept for only four hours per day. He would keep awake at a stretch for as long as forty-eight hours and even seventy-two hours especially whenever his experiments were near completion.
He conducted thousands of experiments. In fact two of his past times were said to be “reading and experimenting”. He was indeed a ferocious reader as he would first exhaust all literatures on the subject he intended to work on. His method follows his own popular statement, “genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration”.

In recognition of his record breaking but yet to be broken achievements and inventions, Edison received honours and awards from all parts of the world.

-         In 1881, he was awarded the French Legion of Honour for developing electric power distribution system.
-          Italy made him a grand officer of the crown in 1889

-         He received awards from the governments of Chile, Britain, Russia, Japan, and many other nations.
\
-       Henry Ford (founder of the ford motor and an American business man), spent millions of dollars to erect a    museum of industry consisting largely of Edison’s inventions.

-     When Edison died in 1931, the United States government considered turning off all electric current in the country for a minute or two as a tribute to him.

It is needless to ask whether or not Thomas Edison had major challenges. In fact he had catalogues of them. In addition to those earlier noted, here is one of his major setbacks...........

Do you agree that Nigerian graduates are unemployable?

MENACE OF EXAMINATION MALPRACTICE

Recent reports from respected leaders in this country show that ‘many Nigerian graduates are unemployable.’ There are many reasons for this. One of them is the low or fallen standard of our

education. Would it so much surprise you to find graduates who cannot speak correct English? Are you unaware that many universities abroad now reject our certificates? It is well established that many of our graduates cannot defend the certificates they lay claim to. One of the reasons for all these is examination malpractice.

Examination malpractice is a major challenge facing not only our educational system but the overall development and progress of our nation. Like a canker-worm  it has eaten very deep into the fabrics of the society, and indeed all facets of our educational system; from the primary to the university level. Students, and strange enough parents and even teachers have been noted to be involved one way or the other.

According to a university researcher, examination malpractice “has proven to be an incurable disease in the educational system making nonsense of the educational standards”. A writer on the incidence of examination malpractice noted that “it is a reflection of moral decadence of our country.” A group of writers sees it as the features of a society that nurtures cheats and mediocre and turn them to celebrities. Thisday (a popular Nigerian newspaper) describes it as the “silent epidemics” (27-05-08). All these go to describe the extent to which the evil of examination malpractice has gone.

The evil of this terrible monster is unquantifiable. How we can have a corrupt free state when examination malpractice remains a flourishing business. Where is the place of good educational standard in the midst of massive academic dishonesty? How can our graduates be employable when possibly some of them cheated their way through? It is regrettable, but the truth is that the future seems to be unpromising unless an urgent step is taken to get this hydra-headed monster arrested. The question that readily comes to mind is "what is responsible for examination malpractices"?

DILIGENCE, DISCIPLINE AND DETERMINATION

  1. Diligence
There is no short cut to good and enduring success; you must pay the full price in the currency of hardwork. This is telling us that the road to true greatness or outstanding achievement is that of hardwork. Actually, this is the summary of the '7P's. They are meant to prepare and propel you to work, work harder, work smarter, work right and in short to give your very best. There is absolutely no reason not to give your best in anything you do, particularly in the pursuit of your dream or life’s goals as whatever is worth doing at all is worth doing well. This is what diligence is all about. It is applying the best of your strength and intelligence in whatever you do.

Diligence helps you to actualize your abilities, discover more potential in yourself and puts you on the track to greatness. The more diligent you are, the more you will discover about what you can do. Do not be afraid of doing too much, else, you will always do too little.

What you see as difficulties are most times opportunities disguised as work. “If you give your best you cannot lose”.  The stories of great heroes revealed that they were ordinary men and women with extra diligence added to their purpose for living. For example, Florence Nightingale, we read would work for twenty four hours at a stretch. Thomas Edison slept for only four hours per day. Many times he would stay awake with his experiments for forty-eight hours or even seventy-two hours especially when the experiments were near completion. Hard work does not kill but laziness does.

“While the rest of the worlds are sitting on their couch….achievers are working on their goals – achieving their dreams.”  - Chris Widener.

  1. Discipline

“He who lives without discipline dies without honour”. We look at discipline here as the ability to do what is right, when it is right. Ability not to do what is wrong – what is inimical to your dreams and purpose for living.  Discipline helps to avoid procrastination – the greatest self-made enemy to success. It assists you to follow your plans, pursue your goals and keep to your principles. Self-discipline is the road to purpose driven living.

Areas where you need to discipline yourself among others include, oversleeping, laziness or idleness, addiction to television, attendance to frivolous entertainments and the likes, yielding to pressure to do what is wrong, flocking around bad friends, etc. The number of hours spent watching television, or attending to unprofitable venture, if you will limit this and invest same on your studies, your achievement would be a big surprise even to yourself.

  1. Determination
There is a crucial link between lasting success and determination. Determination works alongside diligence and self-discipline in bringing your dreams to reality. It is determination that keeps you focused and committed to your goals. Self-discipline will not be that easy, it takes resolute determination. Without determination, you will find yourself giving up too soon.

Determination has much to do with the will power. It is true that wherever there is a will there will be a way. Meaning with determination you can achieve the purpose driven life and climb to the heights of your dreams. Make up your mind now that you are going to live an uncommon life; that you are going to be different. Decide now that you will distinguish yourself and be noted for excellence. Draw the work plan to achieving your dreams. Determine to give all it takes by way of hard work and self-discipline and you will soon be celebrated.

In conclusion, do not be afraid of challenges or seeming obstacles. With the ‘7’ Ps, discipline, diligence and determination you can surmount any mountain. You might have failed before, that does not make you a failure, only that you have been offered a new opportunity to begin more intelligently. Work harder, learn from you mistake(s) and forge ahead. “Those who rise up and become success in life view challenges merely as inconveniences and not as problems"
