Career in Marketing

Every producer of goods and services does so for one reason, to satisfy the consumers. That is why it is popularly said that production is incomplete until what is produced gets to the final consumer.

From this, a lot of questions can arise, like: What do the consumers need? How much of goods and services do they need? How can the goods and services get to the consumers? How can they be encouraged to buy the goods and services? Etc. All these questions and many more can be solved by marketing.

Marketingis a total system of interacting business activities designed to plan, price, promote and distribute want-satisfying products and services to present and potential customers at a profit. Marketing tries to know the needs of consumers, produces goods that can satisfy the consumers and gets the goods to them. A marketer is an image builder. He builds the image of a company or a product.

For an organization to continue to exist, marketers are employed in order for the organization’s products or services to get to the customers. Without the products or services getting to the consumers, there won’t be any profit made because of no sales. Manufacturers, wholesalers even retailers employ marketers to sell, promote and advertise their products.

Some of the areas that marketing covers include:

-         Research: finding out what people really like in order to develop a product to suit that need;

-      Advertising:telling or informing the public about a product or service, its use(s), it price, where it can be located, etc;

-          Packaging:Giving a product a physical container, label, paper bag, glass, nylon, etc in order to protect the product, send a message to its users, or differentiate it from another company’s product;

-          Branding: Giving a product or service a name or design a symbol/logo or a combination of these that can make the consumers identify the product or service;

-          Pricing: Giving a product or service the right price that will not be too exorbitant on the consumers and also allow the company to make profit;

-          Sales promotion: This involves activities or materials that further encourage consumers to use a product or service e.g. bonanza, free samples, contests, free gifts, discount, etc.

The list is endless.

CAREER IN ARCHITECTURE

What is architecture about? How does one become an architect in Nigeria? What work do you do as an architect and where do architects work? Is architecture relevant or important? Should you study architecture?
If these are the questions that you are interested in finding answers to or something related; then you are sure in the right place, read on.

Architecture is the science of designing and construction of the environment to meet aesthetic and functional needs of man. It can be defined as the branch of science that deals with the design and modification of the environment to meet the users’ need.

In architecture, we are concerned with the task of analyzing, designing, constructing, supervising, maintenance and management of structures (buildings) and the physical environment as it relates to people and their everyday existence.

Architects on the other hand are
the licensed professionals in architecture. They organize space, design houses, office buildings, skyscrapers, landscapes and even entire cities. They are trained in many areas from historic preservation to structural engineering.

Importance and Relevance of Architecture

So long as the world and human beings exist, architecture will continue to be relevant and important. Take a look at the world’s beautiful cities, the habitable and magnificent buildings and edifices and you will naturally appreciate architecture. The expertise of architects in creativity and design becomes invaluable when we need to conserve old buildings, redevelop parts of our towns and cities, understand the impact of a development on a local community, manage a construction programme or need advice on the use and maintenance of an existing building.

Architects work closely with other members of the construction industry including: building engineers, builders, surveyors, planners, etc. They spend much of their time visiting sites, assessing the feasibility of a project, inspecting building work and managing the construction process.

Training and Education of Architects

Architects need to undergo specialized training and education with a practicum for practical experience in order to qualify and earn a license to practice architecture. Many universities and polytechnics offer the course. Duration of study in the university is a minimum of six years in what is known as the two-tier curriculum operated in many Nigerian universities. The first-tier covers a period of four years leading to the award of Bachelors degree, while the second-tier made up of two years leads to the award of Masters Degree in Architecture.

Nigerian polytechnics run Higher National Diploma in Architectural Technology spanning a period of five years and consist of two years of National Diploma, one year mandatory industrial training and two years of Higher National Diploma. The basic goal of polytechnics running architectural courses is to train technologists and technicians; hence there is emphasis on industrial training or manual skills.

To gain admission into the university, candidates must possess five credits in English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and any of Fine Art, Geography, or Wood Work, Biology, Economics, Technical Drawing, Further Mathematics. For direct entry admission, candidates need two ‘A’ level passes chosen from Mathematics or Physics, and Chemistry, Geography or Fine Arts. Candidates with OND/HND upper credits in relevant fields are equally considered for direct entry admission.
