CAREER IN PHARMACY

You probably do not know much about the profession of pharmacy or the person of the pharmacist. To some the pharmacist is no other person than “the chemist man”, while not a few call him the “drug seller”. Very many people cannot differentiate between the pharmacist and the physician
. To you, who care to know, welcome on board as we delve a little into the world of pharmacy.

Pharmacy, though very related to other health care professions, remains a distinct and a very unique healthcare profession.  The pharmacist on the other hand, is the health professional that is trained in pharmacy school, qualified and licensed or authorized by the appropriate authority to practice pharmacy.

Pharmacy is a health science concerned with the study of all there is in drugs, drug products, medicines, medicinal products and the appropriate application of such knowledge in the manufacturing of drugs and in the right selection of drugs for treatment of diseases or ailment(s) in patient(s). Pharmacists then are the medication or drug experts on the health care team. They are so called because they are the main professional in medicines having the knowledge, skills, and expertise to be trusted with the safe and effective use of drugs.

The field of pharmacy is very broad encompassing:

  1. Pharmacognosy: the study of drugs of natural origin i.e. from plants, animals, and mineral resources.
  2. Pharmaceutical Chemistry: the study of how different active molecules (active ingredients) interact, their chemical structures, how their activities are being affected by substituent groups on them, their chemical synthesis, etc
  3. Pharmaceutics and Pharmaceutical Technology: the study of the preparation, manufacturing, formulation into different dosage forms i.e. tablets, capsules, syrups, injectable etc.
  4. Pharmaceutical Microbiology: the study of antibiotics, and how to prevent drugs from being contaminated by micro-organisms.
  5. Clinical Pharmacy: the study of diseases and how drugs can be used in treating/managing them, or pharmacotherapy.
  6. Pharmacology: the study of the individual drugs, how they work, what they do, how they do it, what they do to the body (pharmacodynamics), what the body does to them (pharmacokinetics),when not to take them (precautions or contra-indications), where they work, what should not be taken with them (interactions), etc

Career in Physiology

Becoming a Purpose Driven Achiever

Physiology simply put is “the study of function”. It is one course very important to the study of life and remains a common language of all life sciences; whether in the medical, biological, pharmaceutical or agricultural sciences.

Since living things comprise of plants, and animals, we have plant physiology (study of function in plants) as well as animal physiology (study of function in animals). Under animal physiology, we have human physiology which is the study of function of the human body.

Human physiology or physiology (as found in some institutions) shall be our focus in this discourse. It is the scientific study of the normal functioning of the human body. While anatomy studies the structures of the human body, physiology digs deep into how those structures interact and function in a normal state.

Relevance of Physiology

Physiology is very important as it is the foundation of all medical sciences. It is closely related to anatomy, forms the basis/reference point for pathology (study of the abnormal function of the body i.e. function in the presence of disease); it cannot be separated from pharmacology (study of drugs and how they are used), and forms the background for all medical practice and treatment.

Physiologists try to answer key questions in different areas of medical sciences ranging from the function of a single cell to interaction between the body systems and the environment and also how different physiological processes like cardiovascular, renal, endocrine, and reproductive respond to different drugs, chemicals and medicinal extracts. Students studying medicine, pharmacy, nursing, laboratory science, etc., study physiology as part of their undergraduate courses.

Where to Study Physiology

A degree course in physiology (Bachelor of Science degree) is offered in some Nigerian universities. These include: ILORIN, IBADAN, LAGOS, and ABU.

Admission Requirements

To qualify for admission, prospective students must possess at least five ‘O’ Level credits in English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. Candidates must sit for the UTME and obtain acceptable points as well as passing the Post-UTME test of the chosen institution. Some institutions offer remedial programme which is a pre-degree programme through which one may gain admission to study physiology. Also, two ‘A’ Level passes in physics, chemistry and biology may qualify you for direct entry admission in some universities.

It takes a minimum of four academic sessions to earn a Bachelors degree in physiology for UTME students while direct entry students spend minimum of three academic years to qualify.

Prospects

Employment opportunities abound in teaching and research institutes, pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries. Good graduates may find employment as university lecturer, teachers in other higher institutions or secondary schools, while some work as laboratory assistants or technologists. Generally, a higher degree in physiology (MSc, PhD) opens up more opportunities. Welcome into the exploration of the world of physiology.

There are many institutions in Nigeria that offer educational courses. These include: Colleges of Education, National Teachers’ Institute, Polytechnics and Universities. Universities and Polytechnics
have faculties of education and institute of education respectively; while, Colleges of Education and National Teachers’ Institutes are educationally owned institutions.

Colleges of Educations offer a three year programme leading to the award of National Certificate in Education (NCE). Students are required to study two subjects and education with other general studies. On completion, student teachers are mandated to undergo teaching practice in primary or secondary schools to qualify as teachers.

In colleges of Technology and Polytechnics, it takes a minimum of two years to obtain a National Diploma (ND), and another two years to obtain Higher National Diploma (HND). But this is not a teaching certificate, i.e., they are not professional teachers, they will only qualify as one after undergoing a one year educational programme in the form of postgraduate diploma in education (PGDE); taken to be equivalent of first degree.

In the university, period of study is normally four academic years to earn Bachelor of Education (B.Ed), Bachelor of Arts in Education [B.A (edu)], Bachelor of Science in Education [B.Sc (edu)] or Bachelor of Technology in Education [B.Ed (Tech)].

Admission Requirements

For admission into any of the branches of education, in the university, prospective students must possess credits in three subjects relevant to the branch of education where admission is being sought. Credit passes in English Language and in most cases Mathematics is required. Prospective candidates are advised to go through the current JAMB brochure for detailed information regarding their specific educational course of choice, the requirements and where the course is offered.

Challenges of the Teaching Profession in Nigeria

Challenges of the Education Profession in Nigeria

Teachers at all levels in Nigeria are yet to take their rightful position. This perhaps explains the popular slogan, “Teachers’ reward is in heaven”, meaning, they are not being well remunerated or respected for their painstaking efforts and services. Their take home pay is below standards the world over, while there is gross under funding for education. These challenges and many others have left the teaching profession in a less desirable state. But, and as if that was not enough, it has contributed in no small way to the fallen standard of our education.

One cannot but use a medium of this nature to send a strong appeal to the government and all stake holders in educational sector to give education and teachers’ welfare all the attention and priority it deserves. This will not only restore the glory of the teaching profession but will have a good telling effect on our educational standard.

The challenges notwithstanding, the teaching profession remains rewardable and honourable. It is true that teachers may not live in affluence like the politicians, but you can be sure of a decent, satisfying and fulfilling life; depending on you anyway. You sure need to be focused, love your work with passion, be hard working and have a strong desire for career progression. As a degree holder, don’t remain at that level, go ahead and obtain your Masters and even Doctorate degree. No doubt, this will take you to places beyond your dream, opening up more opportunities for you.

What is the work of Educationists?

Works of Educationists

In continuation of our talk on Career in Education, we shall be looking at what educationists do. We saw in our immediate last post what the teaching career is about (should you take education as a career?).

Career in education as we noted, is both noble and rewarding. It encompasses the act and practice of imparting knowledge and skills with the intention of inducing
learning.

If you choose to take a career in education, what it means is that, you choose to become a professional teacher.

The works of a professional teacher include but not limited to:Teaching, learning assessment, research, curriculum development, administration and policy development.

You could teach at any educational level depending on your qualification. People who qualify as NCE (National Certificate in Education) holders can teach in the Nursery, primary or junior secondary schools. Degree holders however teach in secondary schools. Higher qualifications like Masters and Doctoral degrees will qualify you to teach in higher institutions like the polytechnics, universities, etc. The latest development is that nobody teaches without a qualification in education. i.e., those who already are teaching without any training in education would have to go and earn at least a diploma in education (Postgraduate Diploma in Education, PGDE).

Also, since there are many areas of practice, you may choose to work with the physically, emotionally or intellectually challenged individuals as special educationist, educational psychologist, physical or occupational therapist or social worker.

SHOULD YOU TAKE EDUCATION AS A CAREER?

A survey recently carried out in a school confirmed that not many school children would love to grow up to become a teacher. The reasons are not far-fetched, “teachers are not respected”, “teachers are not well paid”, and so many of the likes about teachers’ predicaments in this country. One only wonders that even children are very much aware that teachers are yet to take their rightful place in this country. This is true and there is no denying the fact, but let us for a moment look away from the problems and find out what career in education is all about.

Career in education or the teaching profession is great and rewarding, the myriads of challenges notwithstanding. In fact it is the noblest. Come to think of it, what could anybody become without the teacher? Whatever anyone is today or would be tomorrow, whether a lawyer, engineer, pilot, doctor, politician, just name it, is through the instrumentality of nothing but the teaching profession.

It is commonly said and it is very true that education is the best legacy. It is the bed rock of any nation being primarily responsible for the overall development of a country by ensuring a robust and vibrant human resource. This supports the fact that the teaching profession is very important if not the most important.

The word “education” could be understood as the acquisition of knowledge, information, facts, skills, concepts, attitude and values that can change the behavior of a person in a desirable manner. It is viewed as the dialogue between the past, present and the future, involving the passage of accumulated lessons and knowledge to the incoming generation.

The teaching profession is as interesting as it is challenging. But, as you will soon discover, it is very rewarding. It is filled with varying opportunities and possibilities.

Positive Mindedness, Principle Centredness and Possibility Mentality

'7PS' OF PURPOSE DRIVEN LIFE
This is a continuation of our discourse on the '7Ps' of purpose driven living. In one of our previous posts (Becoming a Purpose Driven Achiever), we saw the first P as 'Purpose Driven'. Follow on as we take a look at the other Ps. Welcome on board.

1.     POSITIVE MINDEDNESS
According to Bill Newman, “The positive mind has extra problem solving power”
.  Do you wonder why you need this? Because, the road to enduring success is not smooth; it is lined with both the good and the bad. Only the positively minded can grab advantages in the midst of disadvantages. It is the factor that keeps you optimistic in your journey to greatness. You need this “extra problem solving power” to keep you going even when the going is tough. Having the positive mind entails having the right attitude, the right perspective and the right behaviour to situations, and people. Be positive, think positively and speak positively, for ‘as a man thinks (and speaks), so he is’

2.     PRINCIPLE CENTEREDNESS
If becoming a great achiever is your priority, you must have principles guiding your life. Principles here mean you have a set of rules, values, and standards guiding your life. You know where you are going and have diligently devised your means of getting there. You know what to do and what not to do. In short you have a stand for something positive and you are ready to defend your stand. Principle centeredness has many advantages. One, it helps you set goals and commits you to the pursuit of same. Two, it equips you with a burning desire to follow your goals through to a successful completion. Lastly, it helps you avoid lots of unnecessary distractions as you will have no time for the non-essentials. For, “he, who dances to every tune, will soon be lame on both feet”. And, “he who has no stand for anything will always fall for everything”.

3.     POSSIBILITY MENTALITY
Napoleon Hill said, “Whatever idea your mind can conceive, if you believe it, you will achieve it.” That is the power of possibility mentality. It is having a firm believe that all things are possible. First, believe in yourself. Self-distrust is the architect of failure. And then believe that nothing is impossible. This is the secret of the world’s greatest achievers like Henry Ford who said “I am looking of a lot of men with infinite capacity for not knowing what can’t be done”. What he meant was that he needed men who have possibility mentality, people in whose mind and dictionary, the word ‘impossibility’ cannot be found. Believe you can and you will.
Creativity is a component of possibility mentality…..
